100 years of Montessori Education
In Today's Education Times which comes with the Times of India, they published an article about the MONTESSORI HOUSE OF CHILDREN celebrating its first centenary and it just prompted me to write up this blog. I'm a product of the Montessori method of education at I feel that studying there has been the best thing that's happened to me. Cause studying in a Montessori system, is very different from studying in any other school. And Yeah, Just for the record, I studied in Taraporewalla's AMI Montessori House of Children under the patronage of Head Mistress Miss K.E. Taraporewalla, who I believe is the best teacher I've come across. She was about 80+ when I was in Montessori 'A' which is equal to class 4..and she is still going strong I believe. Most of the Children there were from well to do families but I dont think that was the criteria for admission there.ORIGINALLY POSTED ON JANUARY 23, 2006 On my other blog http://missflyingfinn.blogspot.com
The Montessori system of Education is different in the sense that they admit children at the age of 2-2 1/2 Yrs and no more. We had three environments, not classes, environments. Joosten, Chauhan and Adil Alaan--I think they added 2 more after I finished my schooling there. So I was in Joosten. Would you believe we wore anything we liked to school..no uniforms. That means I had the first experience of going to school in a school uniform only after I joined another school in 5th. The MOntessori was till class 4 only n still is. I remember going to school, puttin my basket in a corner allocated for that purpose and went for the prayers. After that we went to our respective environments. Children of different age groups were in da same environment. And we did different activities for the classes instead of taking down notes. We had, what you call as learning props which helped us learn alphabets, numbers and maths while it seemed like we were playing. My favourite at school used to be the thin rectangular wooden box which had cylinders of various sizes. The activity there was to remove the cylinders of all sizes slowly and place them carefully on the ground and then place them back into the box. It was more of an ettiquette stuff. We had to remove chairs carefully and place them back carefully without making much noise. Also we had to bring out our mats and place them on the ground and fold them neatly and place them back.
I learned so many things there which I continue to follow to this day. One thing I'm sad about is that I've lost out on the brilliant handwriting that other motessori educated children have, my head mistress had always been very impressed with me and my manners when I was there. Wonder 10 years down what will she think of me. Anyways, Here's a tribute to the Montessori system of education which according to me is the best in the world.
