ORIGINALLY POSTED ON DECEMBER 14, 2005 on my other blog http://missflyingfinn.blogspot.com
Well to start off, I am totally miffed with the politics of Indian Cricket team selecti0n. What was the point behind dropping Ganguly and placing Jaffer in the team?? Kiran More's explanation is laughable...at least for me. Yes I am a big Ganguly fan but still I wont want him in the team if he is not performing well.He was given a chance and he did a fine job. But plz, wil sum1 tell me jus wats wrong with the system??? If performing under pressure wont get u back in the team, then what will??
"The situation is that I don't want Ganguly at number six. We want Yuvraj to play there. He has done well, and we don't want to have Sourav in the team and put him in the reserve," More told reporters after the selection meeting. "What we felt was that Yuvraj is in good form and we are looking at future. We want to give him more chance and prepare him for Pakistan and England," he said.
What on earth is that supposed to mean?? You give the most successful captain of your country two games to prove his worth, out of which one game is washed out and the other, as far as I think, the performance was reasonable. Now shouldn't he be given another chance to prove himself...if not for anything else, for jus serving the country for so long. I agree we rarely get to see that old Sourav, dancing down da pitch n hit that amazing sixer!! Maybe he does not have the same stamina and yes, I too think he is very lazy. But all said and done, jus let him bow out of the game with dignity. For me, Jaffer is only the symbol of the power-shift(or rather PAWAR-Shift) from Kolkatta to Mumbai(Jaffer a mumbai lad I imagine???) I think any decision on Sourav should have been reserved after this series.
More agreed Gautam Gambhir's run of poor scores was a concern and Jaffer was picked as an alternate opener considering his experience and ability against fast bowling. "Definitely it (Gambhir's form) is a concern area. Pakistan will not be an easy tour, we have to look at the future also," he said. "Gambhir has not clicked in only three matches but he has done well otherwise. Jaffer has done well in domestic cricket, he has the experience and the ability to play fast bowlers. That's why we have picked him."
Well I think the reporters who attended this press conference echoed my sentiments. The excuse dint make sense to me and to them. It just totally defies logic. None of them spoke, dint ask many questions. That from the press that's always impounding the selectors with questions. I think it is a total shame. I'm used to calling my elder bro's DADA...But this time I say it for the DADA of the country "DADA...we are with you."
