Baghdatis Tames David!!

ORIGINALLY POSTED ON JANUARY 26, 2006 on my other blog http://missflyingfinn.blogspot.com
Hey People
I jus watched the semi-final match between Marcos Baghdatis and David Nalbandian in the Australian Open. So did any of You catch it?? I mean it was jus tooo good!!! I had been hoping for Nalbandian win but the way Baghdatis was playing, he was a clear winner. The game had so many ups an down...a five-setter and Baghdatis finally closing it out with a 3-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the final. The score line however says nothing about the sheer pleasure and excitement of the match.
The Unseeded 20 year old Cypriot coming from two sets to love down and clinching the match...it was just remarkable. You had to see the match to believe all that had happened. My personal favourite was Baghdatis serving for the match in the final set 5-4 at 15-15 and down comes the rain. Despite the Rod Laver Arena having a roof, they hadnt closed it down fully as a result there was a rain delay for about 20 mins or so I guess. The game could have gone anywhere from there but the Cypriot kept his nerve against the Argentine even when the chair umpire ruled the ball "OUT" at 40-30 in the final set, match point, even though we later got to see from the television replays that the ball was "IN".
So 40-all and then Nalbandian faults giving the Cypriot another match point which he converts with an ace. It was just unbelievable. His supporters have made the matches more lively and to everyone who thought it was a matter of luck and co-incidence that he beat three seeded players i.e Roddick(2), Ljubicic(7) and now Nalbandian(4)..how can it be mere co-incidence???
He next faces either Nicolas Kiefer(21) or Roger Federer(1)..though it is highly unlikely for the number 21 seed to go past the number 1 seed. And yeah the quater-final match between Grosjean(24) and Kiefer(21) was a good one too....
Anyways, it was just an exciting match and this is the first grand-slam final for Baghdatis. So lets not expect too much from him. But still, just think, If he wins wouldn't that be a fairy tale win for the player??? Anyways, all the best Baghdatis...I'm rooting for you!!
